Day 38: The Battle for Hospitality

Carol:
We started the day after a carb-loaded breakfast at the Circus City Grill. In freshly laundered clothes, we headed towards Monroeville, IN.
At various points on this trip, we've been faced with two possible routes and I always have to remind myself the reasons for our adventure before making a decision. For example, today we had to decide between the more efficient state highway 24 and the less trafficked county roads suggested by ACA. I remembered that one of my goals was to see the country and you don't get to see very much when 18-wheelers are blocking your view. Boy am I glad we took the county roads! In the small town of Lagro, we met and had a nice conversation with another touring couple that was headed West from Washington, DC. Upon their recommendation, we had lunch at the dam within the gorgeous and shaded Salomnie State Park.
We stopped in Zanesville for a water refill and much needed snacks. When the store cashier heard that we were heading to Monroeville, she remarked, "They're very welcoming to cyclists there!" Not to be beat, the man standing in line behind Colin said "We're pretty nice too" and bought our afternoon snacks for us. As we passed through Hoagland, an entire porch full of people cheered us on. The town of Monroeville did not disappoint as it offered the use of its indoor pavilion, complete with showers, washer/dryer and cots specific for cross country cyclists. In the competition for hospitality, it's hard to say which Indiana town takes the prize.
Colin and I are off to dinner in town, with a stop at the local icecream shop, Whippy Dip. I cant wait!

Colin would like to note that we passed a Clydesdale Ranch. It was awesome. I learned about draft animals.
