Day 36: Summoning all the cyclists

Carol:

We started our day with a nice conversation with the campground owner, Fred. We learned that the river by Cornell is one of the few rivers that flow north and has been a trading post/settlement for hundreds of years.
As I got on the road, I thought about all the different ways people talk about distances. In South Dakota, people talk about distances in terms of hours driven in a car. Back home in Brooklyn, it's 3 blocks down and a right turn at the corner store. Colin tells me that in Duxbury, it's all about mileage. In Illinois, it's about cornfields. It seems to always be in just a few cornfields that we'll find the county road we want to turn on.
Most of the morning was taken up by putting on and taking off rain jackets in anticipation of a thunderstorm. As Colin likes to say, the fastest way to deter a storm is to put rain gear on.
We decided to stop in Ashkum to refill our water bottles, when we found 2 other touring cyclists. Julian and Johnnie are from the UK and taking a gap year, which includes a tour of the US. It was really fun to chat with them about our respective routes and routines on the road. Apparently we all consume granola bars ad nauseum.
Unfortunately the entrance into Indiana was uneventful and lacked a "Welcome to Indiana" sign. The photo of the Route 55 sign will suffice for now.
Heading to Rennsalear involved some headwinds that slowed us down considerably. As a result, we stopped in Brook for a much needed sugar injection. Filled with Hostess cupcakes and Coke, we pedaled onward to our Warmshowera hosts, Kyler and Kimberly. We were treated to an awesome homemade meal, replete with cornbread and homemade strawberry jam, as well as 2 other bike tourers. We spent the night around a fire in good company.

101 miles
2462 total miles.
