Day 30: Riding the Wind

Colin:

We awoke refreshed and set about helping our (great) hosts prepare a breakfast of potatoes, venison sausage eggs and toast.
After we all cleaned up Carol and I prepared to ride off just as Robbie and Faith got ready to head off on their own trip on a motor trike.
Straight off the bat, winds out of the southwest made for slow going. After about 8 miles, we turned east and cruised along much faster and having much more fun. All too soon it was time to head south again.
This second slog into the wind convinced us to change our plans and while eating lunch in a nice town park, we decided to change our plans and just head straight east, banking on the forecasted wind shift for the next few days to bring us back onto our planned route.
However, by the time we got on the road the winds had gotten stronger and shifted due south and so were true perpendicular crosswinds that made it difficult and uncomfortable to ride safely on the reduced shoulder.
As we had already been discussing taking a short or rest day we decided to once more reroute and sped into Fort Dodge.
We were all settled in around 2 pm and felt good about our choice to relax after the previous fee high mileage days.

61 miles

1961 miles total.
