Day 10: Nine-Tenths of the Law

Carol:

After a massive breakfast and some grocery shopping  (who knew packaged tuna came in flavors such as Hot Buffalo and Honey BBQ?), we were on the road. Getting directions from a local, we decided to take the trail around the lake to head out of Sandpoint. Unfortunately, the beautiful trail was interrupted for about 300 ft by private beach access. Not one to be deterred by property rights, Colin deftly walked our bikes over some cliffs and around the private fence, only to be obstructed by some felled trees on the path (pictured below). We hoisted our bikes over the logs (so this is why we do deadlifts-thanks xfit!) and carried our bikes over 2 sets of railroad tracks before joining the highway. Needless to say, Sandpoint locals might be more adventurous than us when it comes to trailblazing.
Idaho turned out to be a one day bike state. Much of the ride was around the beautiful Pend Oreille Lake. My saddle muscles definitely appreciated the gently sloping hills. Before we knew it, we were in Big Sky Country. We camped at Bullcreek Campground, where we met a fellow camper who had a cycling run-in with a porcupine at 30+mph. As a result, he lacerated his lung, broke 3 ribs and had to cancel his Washington-California bike trip. Who knew porcupines were so dangerous??

45 miles

592 miles total.
